The state of North Carolina continues to offer drivers education to students; however, it is offered after school, on Saturdays, and during the summer. Students are required to complete 30 hours of bookwork and 6 hours of behind the wheel training. Mitchell High School offers two bookwork sessions in the fall, two in the spring, and two during the summer. Classes are held after school or on Saturdays.
When dates for bookwork sessions are set, announcements are made for students to pick up information during their lunches. In addition to meeting age requirements, students must be passing 3 of 4 or 5 of 7 classes, as well as be in compliance with attendance requirements. Students who return the registration information and meet the above requirements are enrolled in the bookwork class. Once students complete the bookwork, they will be scheduled to drive in birthday order.
Currently, North Carolina has a graduating licensing system. For more information click here.
